Heartland Coffee: Catching Up on Their Sustainability Journey
At Café Notos, we really believe in the relationships we have with our suppliers, they’re about shared values and a commitment to sustainability. Recently, we took another visit to our coffee providers: Heartland Coffee Roasters in Llandudno, to catch up with the team and see how their sustainability and ESG initiatives continue to evolve.
Heartland has long been a partner we trust for their quality beans and ethical sourcing, but these visits give us the chance to see how their principles translate into real-world impact. Their coffee comes from long-term, direct relationships with farmers and cooperatives, supporting stable livelihoods, regenerative farming practices, and thriving communities across Ethiopia, Kenya, Colombia, Brazil and more. Every harvest is treated with care to highlight its unique seasonal expression, connecting the land and the people who grow it to the cup we enjoy in Notos.

Sustainable Packaging in Action
Heartland’s sustainability commitment doesn’t just stop at sourcing and also extends into their effects to reduce their environmental impact. Their coffee boxes are made from FSC® certified materials, with up to 10% cotton, and are produced using 100% green electricity. They are fully recyclable, biodegradable, and free from chlorine and acid — showing that quality and sustainability can go hand in hand.
Another facet we highly value about Heartland is that they see sustainability as an ongoing journey rather than a finished product. They are continually reviewing and refining their choices, including moving away from a commercially compostable 1kg bag when it became clear that suitable consumer composting facilities weren’t widely accessible. Instead, they transitioned to a recyclable soft plastic solution that offers a more realistic and effective end-of-life option for customers. These bags, that are sold direct to consumers in our café, also contain up to 50% post-consumer recycled material as well as being fully recyclable. That willingness to acknowledge opportunities for improvement, adapt, improve and respond to real-world challenges is something we deeply respect and identify with at Notos.

Craft, Community, and Connection
Seeing the team in action, from cupping sessions to roasting, reminded us why Heartland is more than a supplier. Their focus on quality, sustainability, and community engagement mirrors our own ethos at Notos. Their roastery is a hub for learning, discovery, and conversation, where sustainability is a key part of who they are as a business, from sourcing to packaging to educating visitors.

Why We Keep Choosing Heartland
Our ongoing visits reinforce what we already know: Heartland is a partner in shared values. Their dedication to ethical sourcing, environmental responsibility, and supporting farming communities aligns with our approach at Notos. Every bag of beans represents not just exceptional coffee, but a story of care, responsibility, and collaboration: from the farm to our café, and now, into your cup.
Catching up with Heartland shows that sustainability is a journey, not a one-off act. It’s about thoughtful decisions, practices, and partnerships. All of which make every cup we serve at Notos something meaningful, as well as delicious.
