Sustainability

As a café full of water sport enthusiasts, we are passionate about protecting our oceans and maintaining the incredible, natural beauty we have on our doorstep. Thanks to our location we are lucky to experience the joy and wonder of our oceans on an almost daily basis and this drives us to ensure they are preserved for everyone to enjoy.

At Notos we believe that we can offer quality food at a price that doesn’t cost the Earth. We know that our actions matter and that every 1% makes a difference, that’s why we have taken steps to help make it easy for everyone that visits to make environmentally conscious decisions. Vegan and vegetarian options are found throughout our Menu as well as locally sourced meat options to limit our impact on these items where we can.

Stocking sustainably - Produce

As a café-deli a big part of our impacts comes from the food and drink we serve and how we source our produce. All our suppliers have been hand-selected because of their quality and their reduced impact on the planet, meaning we are proud of every ingredient we serve. For example, by using local produce suppliers we reduce the amount of transport related CO2 emissions and have also been able to minimise other impacts such as plastic waste.

A great example of how we have reduced our impact is through our milk provider: Pentrefelin. Pentrefelin are a Denbigh based, independent dairy farm focused on animal welfare and regenerating the local environment. All cows are pasture fed and calves are kept with their mothers during the milking process rather than taken away as in factory farming. We receive all our milk in 1litre glass bottles that are then returned to Pentrefelin to be cleaned, sterilised and reused, eradicating the need for plastic.

Zero-waste store

As well as offering sustainable choices on our menu we also have our own zero-waste store where customers can bring in their own containers and stock up on items such as rice, pasta and other bulk items. Our aim is to help staff, local residents and visitors to reduce their plastic consumption with every shop. To do this we stock all our produce from Suma who like us believe in making plant-based eating easy and nutritious and source only the most delicious and sustainable produce. Our dispensers are made from recycled materials, are themselves recyclable and have been sourced from Martek Zero Waste - a Carbon Smart Gold Certified organisation. Why not come in and give it a try?

Eco-friendly packaging

For all takeaway options our packaging comes from sustainable sources and is compostable after use. We use Decent Packaging who are a Carbon Zero certified organisation and produce all their packaging from plant materials meaning after use we are not left with something that continues to be a harm to the environment for years to come.

Stocking sustainably – Products

As well as our café-deli and zero-waste store we also offer a concession stand for items that represents us and are kinder to the planet. We sell a range of items with all products have been chosen with consideration given to their sustainability.

For example, we stock t-shirts from Inland Sea - an Anglesey-founded business that makes clothing from sustainable materials such as organic cotton and recycled polyesters. The tees are a new range made from seaweed fibres that aim to drastically reduce the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere. Seaweed fibre can absorb up to 20 times more CO2 per acre than the equivalent land-based forests and also is kinder to the skin.

Going beyond produce

We also apply our sustainable thinking to all other products we buy for the running of the café. An area we are particularly proud of is our use of Môreco cleaning products that help us reduce our carbon emissions, eliminate unnecessary plastic waste and support a Welsh business doing good things for the planet. Our cleaning products are a new generation of bio-cleaning and offer fantastic results as well as being non-toxic to humans and to aquatic life (yay!).
